According to Apple, the new sensor also has a “new machine learning model [that] delivers sharper images with less noise for unprecedented detail.” This is only true when shooting in ProRAW at 48 megapixels. Otherwise, the camera defaults to a 12-megapixel resolution, as on iPhone 13 models.
This is for a good purpose. ProRAW is a 10-bit file that employs the Linear DNG format to retain more information and dynamic range, giving you more control over exposure and white balance.
With a ProRAW image containing 8,064 × 6,048 pixels, these files require a significant amount of storage and can be as large as 75MB, or three times the size of a typical 12-megapixel image.
How to Take 48MP Photo on iPhone 14 Pro?
You’re unlikely to want to photograph at this resolution all the time unless you have the biggest storage 1TB iPhone 14 Pro model. However, if you really want to take advantage of ProRAW levels of detail, here’s how to do so.
- On your iPhone 14 Pro, open the Settings app.
- Scroll down to Camera and tap it.
- Select Formats.
- Under “Photo Capture,” toggle the toggle next to Apple ProRAW on.
- Check that the ProRAW Resolution setting is set to 48MP.
When you open the Camera app, make sure the ProRAW icon in the top-right of the interface is not crossed out, and you’re ready to point and shoot. Night mode, flash, and macros are all preserved at 12 megapixels.
