It is now possible to reset an iPhone or iPad’s new passcode using the previous passcode you utilised up to three days after the change is performed in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. In other words, Apple allows you to use your old passcode within 72 hours of creating a new one, which is useful if you’re prone to forgetting a newly formed passcode.
When you enter an erroneous passcode on an iOS 17 device after making a change, simply touch on the Forgot Passcode. option at the bottom of the screen to use the Try Passcode Reset option. By tapping it, you can use your previous passcode to generate a new one.

You can also utilise the “Expire Previous Passcode Now” feature to safeguard yourself if someone has figured out your passcode. (Note that if you pick this option, you will no longer be able to access your smartphone with your old passcode if you forget your new passcode.) - Navigate to the Settings menu.
- Scroll to the bottom and choose Face ID/Touch ID & Passcode.
- Under “Temporary Password Reset,” select Expire Previous Passcode Now.
- To confirm, tap Expire Now.
Despite a Wall Street Journal report in February highlighting instances of thieves spying on iPhone users in public when they enter their passcode and then stealing the device in order to gain widespread access to the device, it is still possible to change an Apple ID account’s password with an iPhone’s passcode.
In June 2023, Craig Federighi, Apple’s software engineering leader, stated that the company has continued to “look at other ways to address this,” but no improvements have been made as of yet. Apple recommended that consumers change from a four-digit passcode to an alphanumeric passcode to make theft more difficult. This may also be done under Settings, in the Face ID & Passcode section, by selecting Change Passcode.
