The YouTube app is testing a new button that will play random videos
YouTube’s power lies not only in its enormously massive collection of web content but also in its recommendation engine. However, for those who simply want to get content started without having to wade through a plethora of alternatives, a new button is beginning to appear, which adds to the mystery.
According to Android Police, a black button in YouTube’s mobile app allows users to randomly start watching YouTube Shorts. This seems a bit redundant given that there’s a much more clear Shorts button in the bottom bar, but it’s not the first time YouTube has experimented with this notion.
A Reddit thread a while back showed off a “Can’t decide what to watch?” widget on the home page that opened up random videos in the same viewing manner as Shorts but with full-length videos, with the message “try a new way to discover videos.”
Android Police noticed the same option, with videos under 20 minutes seen in the video below.
According to Android Police, this button has been in the works for quite some time, since it was discovered by a Reddit user in May. Netflix also features a “Play Something” button, which debuted in 2021 and surfaces random series and films you’ve never seen before. This function has spared me from scrolling endlessly through Netflix’s library, and it appears that YouTube will do the same.
It’s unclear how broadly this is being tested – we’re not seeing either choice – but it’s still a good feature. Please let us know if you see this in the comments section below.
